Meet “GrayBeard”: Our 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland Build
Every great adventure needs a reliable partner, and ours answers to the name GrayBeard.
GrayBeard is a 2021 Jeep Gladiator Sport S finished in sleek Sting-Gray. Far from your standard Sport S, this rig came factory-equipped with a robust MOPAR build sheet that gives it a massive head start on the trails. It serves as our gear hauler, mobile basecamp, and trail explorer.

The Baseline: Factory Specs
Before we turned a single wrench, GrayBeard was already hiding some serious hardware under the fenders, including wide-track axles typically reserved for the Rubicon and Mojave trims.
- Engine: 3.6L Pentastar V6
- Chassis & Axles: Dana M210 Wide Front Axle | Dana M220 Wide Rear Axle
- Gearing & Drivetrain: 3.73 Gear Ratio with an Anti-Spin (LSD) Rear Differential
- Electrical & Cooling: 240 Amp Heavy Duty Alternator, Heavy Duty Engine Cooling, and a Stop-Start Dual Battery System (perfect for running overland accessories).
The Build: Current Modifications & Upcoming Reviews
We believe in building a rig with intention. Instead of throwing parts at it all at once, we are upgrading GrayBeard systematically to improve ride quality, trail capability, and weight management.
We are currently putting several key overlanding and mechanical upgrades through their paces. Deep-dive reviews for each of these components are dropping soon! Click the links below (coming soon) to see our real-world, long-term testing results.
⛺ Overland Habitat & Bed Setup
- Attica 4×4 Frontier Series Bed RackTesting for: Ultimate strength and low profile wind resistance. Built from heavy-duty 8-gauge steel, this rack easily handles our camp footprint with its 350lb dynamic and 800lb static weight limits.
- Cab-Height Roof Top Tent (RTT)Testing for: Quick setup times, comfort, and keeping our center of gravity low by matching the cab height to slice through highway drag.
🛠️ Steering & Suspension
- Clayton 1.50-Inch Triple Rate Rear Lift Coil SpringsTesting for: Sag prevention and load-carrying capacity when fully loaded with our Attica rack, RTT, and heavy camping gear.
- Fox 2.0 Performance Series Shocks (0-1.5″ Lift Front/Rear)Testing for: Off-road fade resistance and keeping highway manners smooth when hauling heavy loads.
- Fox 2.0 Performance Series TS Steering StabilizerTesting for: Eliminating steering bump-steer and keeping the front end tracking dead-straight.
- Synergy Manufacturing Steering Stabilizer Relocation KitTesting for: Ground clearance. This kit moves the factory-positioned stabilizer up and out of harm’s way using the stock tie rod.
- Teraflex Progressive Bump Stop Kit (0 to 4.50-Inch Lift)Testing for: Cushioning hard impacts and saving our suspension geometry during rough bottom-outs.
- Fox Roost Shield Hardware Pair (Front & Rear)Testing for: Keeping our investment safe from flying rocks, gravel, and trail debris.
🔧 Engine & Reliability Upgrades
- Dorman Aluminum Oil Filter Housing (Part #926-959)Testing for: Bulletproof preventative maintenance. The factory plastic unit on the 3.6L Pentastar engine is notorious for cracking and leaking over time. Upgrading to this solid aluminum alternative fixes a critical failure point before it can strand us on the trail.
